Blog 12

#12: Post a blog about how this class has effected your ideas about being a filmmaker – what did you learn about yourself as a filmmaker?  What did you learn about filmmaking in general?

I could fill a book with the things I’ve learned in this class. I expected to learn about the technical side of making movies, including how to use equipment. I’m so glad that I got to learn how to use a professional editing software and am thrilled to have access to Adobe Premiere while studying at UNCW (because that program is expensive!). I learned about filling out important paperwork and the equipment policies which will continue to be important to me as I continue working towards my degree. I didn’t expect to learn so much about working with other people. I enjoyed everyone I worked with, but I realized how people work in many different ways. I also didn’t anticipate that I would learn how difficult it really is to make a good film. I never thought about how long it actually takes to make even a very short film, and now I know how even just 3 minutes can take dozens and dozens of hours of work to complete.
As a filmmaker, I walk away from this class with a little bit of experience. I’ve used some of the equipment and I’ve learned what I’m capable of accomplishing. I’ve also realized how many different job possibilities there are in the film world and that I could put my focus into just one aspect of the filmmaking process, like sound or lighting. I’m more motivated to take another production class because I think I can do better and as I continue to learn, my filmmaking will continue to improve.
